2016 Emergency Preparedness Seminar AOBA’s Emergency Preparedness Committee invites you to save the date for our popular annual education program. This year’s seminar will beThursday, Sept. 22 from 3:00 to 6:00pm at 900 7th Street, NW – hosted by Akridge.

Participate in AOBA's Fall Food Drive!

It's not too late to participate – with your tenants, residents or colleagues - in a Fall Food Drive to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank(CAFB), rated as one of the “20 Best Charities” in the region. 

AOBA’s Fall Food Drive, a project of the Associates Coalition Team and the Charity and Community Events Committee, runs Sept. 28 through Oct. 12.

Facing increasing demands during the past few years, the CAFB distributes 42 million pounds of food, equivalent to 35 million meals, yearly to the greater Washington, DC community through its network of 500 partner agencies.

It’s Easy to Participate! 

Let AOBA know ASAP who from your firm will serve as Fall Food Drive Team Leader. Just email Jeanne Clarke ( with contact info. Then, follow these steps:

1 - Collect - Sept. 28 - Oct. 13.  Decorate and place boxes in your lobby. Remind folks during to bring in the Food Bank’s 
Most Needed Items.” Non-perishable food only.

2-  Count/ Photograph - Oct. 14 - 15. Get a rough estimate of how many items have been collected, report your results to AOBA and send us a photo!

3 - Drop Off - Oct. 16. AOBA hasl arranged several drop off locations around the region, staffed by ACT members.  Volunteers willload all collected food and deliver it to the CAFB.

Fall RPA Course: “Budgeting and Accounting” (required) - Sept. 8, 9,10,15,16,17,22,23,24
Nine evenings from 4:00 to 7:00pm at AOBA.  Instructor: Karen Stiansen, Vice President, DTZ.
Condensed for your convenience, this course allows students to follow the accounting process and creation of a budget from start to finish, focusing on skills such as how to interpret financial statements, annual reports, and statements of cash flows. Also focuses on practical skills such as how to compile lease abstracts and prepare rent rolls.   NOTE: Fall dates for RPA Design, Operations and Maintenance-Part II Course will be announced soon!

Emergency Preparedness Seminar:  “Lessons Learned from Baltimore's Civil Disturbance and from A Forum with Senior Management” 
Sept. 24 – 8:30 to 11:00am at National Geographic Society
Developed by AOBA’s Emergency Preparedness Committee and geared to commercial real estate and security professionals, this year’s program features a dialog with BOMA Baltimore leaders on the recent civil disturbances, and a VIP panel of  industry leaders who will share lessons learned from various emergency situations.

“Understanding Net Operating Income (NOI) and Owners’ Objectives” Seminar
Oct. 7– 2:00 to 4:30pm at The University Club of Washington, DC.
This 101-level seminar is designed for new-to-industry property managers – both residential and commercial – and for those managers who may need a refresher. Instructor is Karen Stiansen, Vice President, DTZ. This seminar will focus on: understanding and implementing owners’ goals and objectives and management practices; understanding the Pro Forma Budget; learning how NOI is determined and the factors that the property team can control which affect NOI.

Fair Housing Seminar - Oct. 14 – 9:00 to Noon at Rollins Congressional Club in Rockville, MD.
This seminar, jointly hosted with PMA, features national expert Nadeen Green, Senior Counsel with For Rent Media Solutions as instructor. Cost for AOBA and PMA members is $125 per person; $195 for nonmembers. The seminar addresses practical issues related to day-to-day fair housing compliance issues. (Note that this seminar was scheduled in March but was postponed due to weather.)  PMA is taking registrations at

Emergency Preparedness Planning for Multifamily Managers

RPA Budgeting and Accounting Course Coming this Fall

To help commercial members sharpen their budgeting skills, AOBA will offer the RPA Budgeting and Accounting course this Fall!  This course is one of three BOMI courses required for the Property Management Financial Proficiency Certificate (see below). We’ll offer the other two required courses later this year.   This course is a great way to broaden your financial skills, gain a certificate AND work towards your RPA.

Our instructor is expert Karen Stiansen, Vice President, DTZ.  Fall dates  coming SOON! The course will be held from 4:00 to 7:00pm, at AOBA, 1050 17th Street, NW, Suite 300.

Cost is $1035 for members; $1060 for non-members.
